Wildlife Drones

About the project:

The ‘Conservation and Environment’ award goes to a project that aims to protect Pangolins from poaching and extinction. Wildlife Drones is the first use of a novel drone-based radio tracking payload to detect and locate very low powered signals from tagged wildlife in dense tropical forests. It’s also the first time that multiple pangolins have been able to be tracked from the air. The data gathered provides unprecedented insights on survival and habitat use of endangered species rescued from the illegal wildlife trade and released back into the wild.

What Airwards Judges said:

I find it almost impossible to overstate quite how perfect this solution is! It’s the optimum combination of technology and personnel to provide a solution that hugely impacts the conservation of these endangered animals. I expect to see much more of this project in the coming years - I want to see it raise funds, build relationships, go global and be a role model for many other wildlife conservation projects involving different animals in other places on Earth.
